A good book and a few uninterrupted hours is all that most of us need to enjoy a day off from our daily lives. Sometimes it’s wonderful to be able to read a book in an environment with some background noise and people going about their day. In a sprawling city like Calgary, however, it can be difficult to find spots that provide the perfect balance of noisy people and peaceful solitude. That’s why we put together a list of the Best Places to Read in Calgary.

1. Central Library

The Calgary Public Library has 21 wonderful branches across the city. Each branch has spots set aside for people to sit down, relax, and enjoy a good story. The new Central Library, first opened to the public in 2018, has stunning architechture and an amazing collection of books and resources. There are spots on all floors where anyone can sit down and read with only the sounds of people studying in the background. There is also the quiet reading room which has a no noise policy. Many people use this room for focused work or study, so if you need to be around people but in relative silence, then this is a great option for you.

2. Weeds Café

With a 90’s vibe reminiscent of the beloved Central Perk from Friends, Weeds Café is one of the most comforting cafés in Calgary. While they have traditional seating in the front area, their true charm lies in the backroom. Mismatched second hand couches, armchairs, and stools are scattered about in the backroom along with a piano. Sometimes there are visitors who make use of the piano and add a musical touch to the ambience. If you are looking for a comfortable place to read while munching on a sandwich, and don’t mind the buzz of people around you, then this is the spot for you!

3. Prairie Winds Park

Located amongst the residential communities in Northeast Calgary, Prairie Winds Park is a wonderful place to spend a sunny afternoon with a novel. This park doesn’t only have benches and playgrounds – it also has a spray park, wading pool, tennis court, baseball pitch, and soccer field. The whole family can have a fun day at the park, while you can sit off in the distance enjoying your favourite book. The best spot in the park is undoubtedly on top of the legendary hill, which is small enough for you to climb in just a few minutes, but tall enough to offer a breathtaking view of the park and the city around it.
